buffet party food

by M.Dee Dubroff

Buffet party food can run the gamut from finger sandwiches to bagels and lox to more exotic fare with flavorful dips and tasty barbecue sauces. The sky’s the limit; the only restrictions being those imposed by space and preparation time. The idea of a buffet and everyone serving themselves lends itself to a myriad of diverse presentations and foods.

Setting up an elegant home buffet table can be a lot of work and things could still turn out “blah” without too much effort. For spectacular results, you will need the right buffet party food, a little planning, and a touch of creativity. One way to use the latter is finding ways to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Set cold dishes up on ice, and rent chafing dishes for hot dishes. If you would rather not buy a chafing dish, wrap a few bricks in tin foil and heat them up in the oven. Place them on your table underneath your hot dishes with the help of a heat-proof pad.

What are some ideas for buffet party food?

Buffet party food ideas abound on the Internet where catalogs offer many unusual gourmet food options. Here are a few to think about, but put on your thinking cap and come up with new ones. The vast cosmos of food offers endless possibilities.

1- Sliced bagels and cream cheese

This old standby is always delicious and welcome on any buffet party food table. Use different flavor cream cheeses and spreads like sliced salmon (lox) or egg-salad spread. Use mini bagels and set toppings, egg salad, cream cheeses and such next to each other so that people can create their own special blend of buffet party food.

2- Cherry tomato bites

Buy two containers of cherry tomatoes, rinse them, and scoop out the centers, leaving just the tomato shell. Refill with chicken or tuna salad, (either purchased or made from your own recipe). Place on a bed of lettuce leaves and garnish with parsley.

3- Meat and cheese rolls

This is very versatile buffet party food that is simple to prepare. Buy two or three kinds of your favorite meat, sliced thinly and a chunk of two to three types of your favorite cheeses. Cut the cheese into “finger lengths” and together with one piece of sliced meat roll them up in the meat. Secure them with a fancy toothpick. You can mix and match by varying the meats and cheeses. Place these on a large platter and put small containers of condiments in the center, for dipping.

4- Test your buffet party food table arrangement

This last step is very important and will help avoid many a last minute scramble for space. Before the event, test your buffet party food table setting by putting out all the platters and bowls you plan to use. Arrange them just as you would on the day of the party to make sure they all fit into place according to your plan.

The key to a successful party of any type is planning. After the buffet party is over and you are faced with the mess to clean up, there is only one logical course of action to follow:

Move to another address and make a housewarming buffet party!
