dianas_thanksgivingAhhh, November!  A special month in the U.S. during which many of us plan for and dream about the big Thanksgiving meal that lies ahead.  It's a special time when family and friends gather around the table to give thanks, enjoy a bountiful meal (and MANY leftovers!), and possibly take in some football games.  Sally's Place is here to help you whether you're planning the entire meal, bringing an appetizer, or just looking to find that perfect bottle of wine to give your host and/or hostess.

We also have some fun facts about Thanksgiving that you can use to entertain your gathering:

President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress finally made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state in America, with a production total of 45.5 million in 2009.

Cranberry production in the U.S. was approximately 709 million pounds in 2009. Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington are the top cranberry growing states.

Illinois, California, Pennsylvania and New York are the major pumpkin growing states, together they produced 1.1 billion pounds of pumpkin in 2008, with a combined value of $141 million.

The sweet potato is most plentifully produced in North Carolina, which grew 874 million pounds of the popular Thanksgiving side dish vegetable in 2008.

Three towns in the U.S. take their name from the traditional Thanksgiving bird, including Turkey, Texas (pop. 465); Turkey Creek, Louisiana (pop. 363); and Turkey, North Carolina (pop. 270).

Digest these facts as you digest your Thanksgiving meal this year, hopefully with family and friends.

All the best in food, wine, and travel.

Happy November!
