hyatt regency mission bay spa and marina--san diego

by Sally Bernstein

A stunning $65 million transformation makes this Hyatt Regency special. Think incredible ocean views, waterfront dining, a contemporary poolside lounge, an eco-friendly spa, and redesigned guest rooms and meeting rooms. This is the only hotel in San Diego with multiple water slides, and you and your kids will delight in a water playground with three new pools, a waterfront health club, and a full-service marina with jet skis, sailboats, kayaks, sports fishing and whale excursions - everything you could wish for in a San Diego hotel.

My recent stay began with a pleasant lobby check in and an escort to our room, which overlooked the three swimming pools and Mission Bay, the largest aquatic preserve in the U.S. As the sun set a wedding was taking place on the hotel grounds. The view from our balcony was well worth the complete stay. Be sure and secure a view of Mission Bay or the Pacific Ocean and take your camera.

The style of the rooms is family-friendly. The 429 newly redesigned guestrooms offer a calming décor. Each room includes a Hyatt Grand Bed™, iHome Stereo with iPod dock, a generous work desk and a 32-inch flat screen TV.

Be sure and save time for the eco-friendly Blue Marble Spa. Named for “The Blue Marble” image of the earth taken during the Apollo 17 mission, Blue Marble Spa promotes life in harmony with nature. Blue Marble uses organic and natural skincare products and they offer organic fruits and food options. Their eleven beautifully appointed treatment spaces provide environments that will totally envelope you in well-being. Relax in one of four individual treatment rooms, or in an oversized suite created for couples or partners. You can enjoy a manicure or pedicure in their lounge, have some privacy in one of the five outdoor spa cabanas, or exercise in the waterfront fitness center, a 24-Hour StayFit Gym. This gym and a private marina are close to the Einstein Bros. Bagels, just in case you need coffee and bagels or a light pick-me-up. You are also able to rent kayaks, jet skis, or sailboats and go sport fishing or on whale tours, depending on the time of the year.

Meetings and events take place in 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space, adjacent to the Marina Village Conference Center. Full service catering is available, whether your event is intimate or extravagant. And Hyatt offers a self-service business center with Wi-Fi capabilities, for your other business needs.

The Hyatt has several dining options. Room service, Einstein Bros. Bagels, SWIM Lounge (poolside), and the Red Marlin Restaurant, Bar and Terrace.

The Red Marlin serves savory breakfasts (with a buffet on the weekends), power and leisure lunches and temping dinners. The scenery is exceptional as Red Marlin is located on beautiful Mission Bay and boasts exceptional bayside dining views. The Red Marlin Chef’s Table is situated in the heart of the restaurant with its own built-in fire pit and extensively stocked wine wall. But it is the regionally inspired dishes that will keep you coming back. Think blue crab cakes, crispy ahi tuna, Kurobuta pork chop, grilled filet mignon, seared sea scallops, and seafood arrabiata. And don't forget that whether you’re looking for an afternoon appetizer, a post-dinner sweet or a sunset cocktail, this restaurant delivers it all. The bar and terrace are perfect for drinks and appetizers around the outside fire pit.

If you are traveling with kids, the Hyatt, in addition to their three waterslides that splash into tropical lagoon pools, offers the poolside SWIM Lounge where the staff serves you Pan-Latino cuisine (and specialty cocktails for the adults).
