five mouth watering dishes you must try in portugal

Portuguese food is very under-rated, but it is actually one of the finer cuisines and Portugal has some spectacular restaurants if you know where to look. Whether you are moving to Portugal, going there to study, or you’ve been lucky enough to find a Portuguese friend who is going to cook for you, here are five Portuguese delicacies you must try.

Bacalhau à Brás

This dish is so simple yet so tasty, you could easily replicate the recipe when back home. This cod-based dish uses shredded codfish, straw fried potatoes and onions sautéed to perfection, mixed with parsley and olives. Putting olives in a dish with fish is one that surprisingly works well. Simple and tasty, this dish can be found at many eateries in Portugal.

Torta de Azeitão

For anyone with a sweet tooth, Portugal has a wide range of desserts, many of which are egg-based. This dessert being no different, is a spongey cake rolled into a perfect cylinder and coated with sweet egg yolk. If you are planning to stay in Portugal for a while, Azeitão has some of the best desserts in the country. Portugal has a wide range of food to be discovered and if you happen to be a student looking to study there, you’ll be able to find some luxurious places to stay such as Collegiate Apartments that are centrally located near all the best restaurants. Check out the student accommodation Portugal has to offer, and you may find yourself trying these wonderful dishes sooner than you think.

Alheira de Mirandela

This is another local delicacy that not only tastes great, but similarly has an interesting back story. Although it looks a lot like a pork sausage, alheira was made to fool the Portuguese Inquisition. This sausage was created by the Jewish community (Jews cannot eat pork due to their religion) and used as part of a decoy to fool others into believing they were in fact Christian. To this day, this dish remains a classic on many menus, typically served with chips and a fried egg.

Caldeirada de Peixe

The Portuguese love to use fish in their dishes and have discovered some fantastic ways to make seafood great. The Caldeirada is fish stew that is made up of several types of fish and shellfish, with herbs and tomatoes. This stew is perfectly enjoyed at the end of a long day discovering the streets of Portugal, with it being delicious, filling and nutritious.

Queijo da Serra

Calling all cheese lovers, this is the perfect dessert dish if you aren’t into sweet things. This cheese is made with sheep milk, with a gooey filling and a strong taste to go with it. Depending on where you buy this from it can range from hard and strong to softer and is a little easier to handle for those who aren’t a fan of strong cheeses.
This is not an exhaustive list and there are many more dishes in Portugal to be discovered. The Portuguese love their seafood and know how to do it properly, therefore, if you do get a chance to visit, ensure you tick this delicacy off your list.
