1999 Yosemite Chefs' Holidays

by Sally Bernstein

Winter adventure in Yosemite will again include simmering sauces, delicious desserts and flashing knives as great chefs of the west prepare dishes to delight the eye and palette at the 15th annual Yosemite Chefs' Holidays. Held in the historic Ahwahnee hotel features four weeks of culinary greats, January 10 through February 4.

Indoors, guests can satisfy their cravings for culinary knowledge and fine food through demonstrations, recipes, sampling and attending specially prepared banquets, while outdoors sharpening their appetites with winter activities including ice skating, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, sightseeing tours, camera walks and naturalist programs.
In the impressive setting of The Ahwahnee's Great Lounge, food enthusiasts will learn tips on preparation and presentation of fine food, while surrounded by the snow-capped peaks and misty meadows of Yosemite winter landscape visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The grand finale of each session is the gala Chefs' Banquet, held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings when all the guest chefs from each session, each preparing their own specialty, present a gourmet five-course meal in the magnificent Ahwahnee Dining Room .

Demonstrations are free. Reservations are required for the banquets, which cost $75 per person, including tax and gratuities.

The Ahwahnee hotel offers special Chefs' Holidays Packages featuring two, three and five nights lodging, banquet tickets and a welcome basket. The two and three-night packages include lodging and two (same night) Chefs' Banquet tickets. The five-night package includes four banquet tickets (two tickets to two banquets). Prices for the Chefs' Holidays Packages range from $598 to $1420 (double occupancy).

Participants also have a choice of some tempting lodging specials available at Yosemite Lodge, with lower off-season room rates. Rates at Yosemite Lodge do not include Chefs' Banquet tickets in the cost of the accommodation. We recommend guests arrive the night before the presentation they wish to attend.
