how to achieve the right work-life balance

Working too hard or not hard enough means that you will not have struck the right work-life balance, and that can be a problem. It can make you unwell, both physically and mentally, and it can cause problems in your relationships or career too. Sometimes it can be both. So, striking the right balance is crucial if you want to have a happy, healthy life. In fact, the better a work-life balance you have, the more productive you will be, so rather than taking you away from your business, you could be making it better by slowing down and taking time out. If you think you need to look again at your own work-life balance, here are some ways to do it.

Make A To-Do List
It is a straightforward way of getting back on track, but that does not mean it is not a good one. Making a to-do list is an easy way to get on top of everything that needs to be done and stop feeling quite so overwhelmed. As simple as a to-do list is, it is not just a case of writing everything down and then trying to plough your way through it; this is just going to leave you feeling stressed and worried when you don’t get it all done. Instead, your list needs to have some meaning. It should include:

  • Tasks that are both urgent and important
  • Tasks that are important but not urgent
  • Tasks that are urgent but not important
  • Tasks that are neither important nor urgent

If you write the jobs you need to do down in this order, you can ensure that the most important jobs are done first, and anything that you don’t have time for will be at the bottom of the list and can more easily be done another day. You’ll free up time and reduce your stress levels.

Have Set Work Hours
Something that many people fall into the trap of is not having set working hours, and therefore working until they have finished rather than stopping work because it is five o’clock (or whatever time it is that you are meant to finish). Working late into the evening and beyond to get things finished is terrible for you as you will be missing relaxation time where you can enjoy virtual horse racing bets, reading a book, listening to music, meditating, and much more. You might also skip meals, and again this is a terrible idea when it comes to your health.

It is also a bad idea when it comes to productivity. The longer you work, the more tired you will be, and the less you will get done.  It’s far better to stop earlier and go back to work in the morning when you are fully rested and relaxed; the job will be completed more quickly and to a higher standard.

Turn Off Technology
If you do manage to set yourself strict work hours and stick to them (something that is highly recommended), then you should switch off your tech. That is, the tech you use for work. So, do not check your work emails or log onto any management systems that tell you what is happening. Even if it means having a second phone for personal use so you can still enjoy your social media, for example, it will be worth it for your peace of mind.
