Rancho La Puerta Fitness Resort & Spa and La Cocina Que Canta

by Sally Bernstein

"An hour from San Diego, but a world apart…"

These words have been used to describe Rancho La Puerta Fitness Resort and Spa in Tecate, Mexico, for at least a half century and they remain true today.

Spa goers have been enjoying Rancho La Puerta since 1940 when Edmond and Deborah Szekely founded the world’s first destination spa.  But now there’s yet another reason to travel to this Shangri La in the mountains east of San Diego. And that is the opening of their new cooking school and culinary center, “La Cocina Que Canta” (The Kitchen That Sings).

Saturdays at the Ranch—a one-day cooking school, fitness & spa adventure for people in San Diego and northern Baja California. I know San Diegans who can get away for the day will enjoy this trip south of the border.
I recently went on the day-long trip and although it is one long day, it is one long enjoyable day. We enjoyed the mountainsides and meadows of the Ranch, had spa treatments and/or a fitness class or two of your choice, a tour of the organic garden, an educational and fun cooking experience at La Cocina Que Canta and lunch and dinner.  You will be transported from San Diego by bus into Mexico so no need to drive a car across the border.  The bus leaves the Old Town Trolley Station in San Diego at 8:00 a.m. and returns about 8:00 p.m.  This ride takes about an hour each way.

It’s the perfect getaway for one or two, a group of friends, birthday parties, retreats, or a team-building experience…complete with the warmth of Old Mexico’s charm and graciousness and the company of fellow spa and food lovers.

The 2008 schedule includes: June 7, June 21, July 12, July 26, August 9, August 23, September 6, September 20, October 4, October 18, November 1 and November 15.

Take a colorful Photo Tour on the Rancho La Puerta website to learn more about the school.

In the fall of 2008 Rancho La Puerta will publish their first cookbook titled Cooking with the Seasons at Rancho La Puerta, Recipes From The World- Famous Spa. The book was written by Deborah Szekely and Deborah M. Schneider with Chef Jesus Gonzalez, Chef of La Cocina Que Canta. Photographs are by Robert Holmes. This hardcover book will contain 120 recipes and 60 full-color photographs. The book's 120 recipes are organized as a series of complete -and luscious- seasonal menus.  Throughout, sidebar tips will give valuable advice on everything from choosing the most healthful grains and flours, to grinding spices, to preparing fruit vinegars, to preserving summer's goodness with dried herbs and homemade jams.
