Omni San Diego Hotel--A California Treat

by Sally Bernstein

With miles of sandy beaches and an average 70-degree year-round temperature, it’s no wonder San Diego is a premier travel destination.  The four-star 32-story Omni San Diego Hotel is one more reason to visit this fabulous seaside city.  Nestled in the heart of the historic Gaslamp Quarter across from the Convention Center, the Omni San Diego Hotel puts you close to the city's top sites and attractions.  Explore Balboa Park (which includes the famous San Diego Zoo), take a harbor cruise or catch a Padres Major League Baseball game at PETCO Park, connected to the hotel via a pedestrian skywalk. Omni San Diego Hotel is distinguished as the first U.S. hotel attached to a ballpark.

On the lobby level of the hotel you will find a McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant, known across the U.S. for their fresh fish and seafood and inviting bar scene. They serve 30 varieties of fresh seafood, pastas and salads. And 24-hour guest room dining is also available at the hotel.

The Omni also features bay, city or ballpark views and is just 8 minutes from the San Diego International Airport. They offer high-speed wireless Internet access and a business office.  Guests can enjoy the sun-soaked outdoor 6th floor rooftop terrace with pool, fireplace and the Terrace Bar & Grill. Open seasonally, from the end of June through the beginning of September.

And baseball fans will especially like the Baseball Memorabilia on four floors of the hotel.  These items are from the collection of John and Becky Moores, owners of the Padres.  So before or after taking the skywalk to Petco Park, enjoy autographed baseballs, catcher’s masks, jerseys, helmets and awards from as far back as 1850. The hotel also offers a Baseball Time! Package.   From $289 per night you can enjoy luxurious accommodations, breakfast for two, two tickets to a Padres game and complimentary overnight parking.

The Omni Kids program provides plenty of kid-minded amenities, including suitcases filled with games and books, a goodie bag upon check-in and menu choices prepared especially for young travelers.  Parents are provided with a list of top family attractions, local emergency numbers and a safety/first-aid kit which includes a night light and outlet covers.

The Omni San Diego has other amenities such as a complimentary full-service fitness center, 21 meeting rooms totaling 27,000 square feet of function space, including a 9,266-square-foot Grand Ballroom, which can accommodates up to 790 guests and features a large pre-function area and an outdoor terrace (think weddings).  And pets under 40 lbs. are allowed at the hotel with a $50 non-refundable fee.

Atop the hotel is The Metropolitan, featuring 36 privately-owned penthouse condominiums as the first condominium community in Southern California to be integrated into a high-rise hotel.

Next time you have the opportunity to visit San Diego and want to stay downtown in one of the hubs of the city, think Omni.
