the best suburbs of greensboro, north carolina

Greensboro has a lot going for it, with many large, notable companies having headquarters here from The Fresh Market and Mack Trucks to VF and Qorvo providing a strong job market. But if you'd rather not live in a big city with a population of nearly 300,0000 residents, you might want to consider one of its suburbs instead.

Oak Ridge

Often named among Greensboro's top suburbs to live in, Oak Ridge has a population of just under 7,000 and is particularly ideal for parents who want to live where their kids can attend the best schools - in fact, it got a 10 out of 10 for test scores in a rating by GreatSchools, far above the state average.

Homes tend to be large with plenty of space for families and the land around them tends to be more expansive as well. That said, it's also pricier than other areas, but for those who don't mind paying a little more, that additional cost is likely to be worth it for more space and a quality lifestyle.

Jamestown

Jamestown offers a small-town, friendly feel with a population of only around 4,000. European settlers first arrived in the late 1700s, many of whom were Quaker families. Founded in 1816, it was the earliest continuing settlement in the Piedmont region and today it has a national historic district that includes nine contributing buildings in the Quaker community that date back to the time it was first established.

With the historic streets winding through many picturesque, old buildings and a canopy of trees, it has a serene countryside feel yet downtown Greensboro is only 12 miles away. Plus, crime is far below average, the cost of living is reasonable, and most residents are gainfully employed. While searching for options, you'll definitely want to check out some affordable Jamestown apartments.

Burlington

Located about midway between Durham and Greensboro, Burlington offers one of the easiest and fastest commutes for those who work in the city, located adjacent to I-40 right on the Amtrak line. But you might find a job right here as it's home to Alamance Regional Medical Center and the headquarters of Laboratory Corp of America.

It provides the best of both worlds as a medium-sized city with a population of just over 53,000 with more of a small-town feel. The cost of living is below the national average and there are diverse cultural opportunities too, including a theater and various community-hosted events throughout the year. When it comes to the outdoors, you'll have access to some 3,000 acres of lakes and 40 miles of trail along the Haw River too.

McLeansville

While it's located at the edge of two larger cities, the town of McLeansville itself has a population of just over a thousand, providing a clean, quiet setting and friendly neighbors. You can be in Greensboro or Burlington within 20 to 30 minutes, plus it's not only safe with a very low crime rate, but it tends to be more affordable than most suburbs in this area.

The median home price is just $132,600 as of late August 2021. For those who are struggling to become first-time homeowners, McLeansville is a great choice.
