Eight Restaurants Not to Be Missed as You Travel the World

by Walter Glaser

On my travels I make a point of looking for restaurants that are interesting, have great food, and are ones that I would like to go back to on my next trip. As one has to eat while travelling, one may as well enjoy it to the max.

Here are a few that readers might also find both well worth trying and enjoyable.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
The best restaurants in this popular destination for Australians are in hotels, because the competition is sizzling and each hotel tries to out-do the next with excellent accommodation and cuisine. When in Dubai, head for the JW Marriott and try two of my favourite restaurants – The JW Steakhouse is arguably the finest steakhouse in the Middle East and has never disappointed me. But there is another fun eatery in the same hotel – Cucina, which is an outstanding, affordable, Italian pizza-pasta restaurant where the staff stop serving every 15 minutes or so to sing popular Italian songs, often off key, but with great gusto.

JW MARRIOTT, DUBAI – Abu Baker Al Siddique Road, Adjacent to Hamarain Shopping Centre, Dubai, 16590, UAE. Phone: +971 4 6077977

MOSCOW, RUSSIA
I had never tried Armenian food until I tried the Café Ararat restaurant at Moscow’s Park Hyatt, but when I tasted it I was immediately captivated. Don’t miss the appetisers there – meat-filled pastries with superb, subtle herbs and plentiful use of yoghurt and goat’s cheese, and the chicken leg stuffed with  minced chicken and almonds. Absolutely delicious.

PARK HYATT, MOSCOW – 4 Neglinnaya Street, Moscow. Phone: +7 495 783 1234 ext. 5028

EURODISNEY (NEAR PARIS), FRANCE
When we were Mickey’d-out we went for an afternoon drive to the magnificent Chateau de Fère, a beautiful French chateau hotel that also has a fine dining restaurant. If you plan to eat there, ask chef Dominique Quay if he can put his superb dish of shrimp balls on the menu. If the weather is good, see if you can dine on the terrace.

CHATEAU DE FÈRE – 02130 Fère-en-Tardenois, France. Phone: +33 (0)3 23 82 21 13

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
I love Latin America and its food, and am equally fond of Spanish tapas. So it was a real delight to find an absolutely superb and reasonably priced restaurant, Lulo’s, that has both in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. Run by an Australian chef, Matthew Waldron,  and his charming Colombian wife, Joanna Bolivar, the cuisine here was as good as the very best I’ve tasted in Latin America and Spain. I don’t usually get past the tapas, but their paellas are also not to be missed.

LULO’S – 798 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Australia.  Phone:  +61 (0)3 9818 8321

TURKISH COAST, TURKEY
A once-in-a-lifetime dinner to remember forever? If you are planning a honeymoon or special-occasion cruise to the Turkish Coast and Greek Islands. We recommend the computerised sailing ships of the Windstar Line. On shore excursions include a classic, candle-light, white-gloved dinner in the forecourt of the 2500-year-old library in the Graeco-Roman ruins of Ephesus. This dinner, accompanied by a three-piece string trio playing classical music was something I will never forget, and was a highlight of our trip along the Turkish Coast.

ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
When I first went to Russia in the Stalin days it was hard to get an edible meal. But now Russia has, thankfully, gone full circle. In St Petersburg we were recommended to dine at the Stroganoff Steakhouse, where the cuisine was as good as the finest steakhouses in USA. Not surprising, when they were serving Australian lamb, Argentine beef and New Zealand venison, with an equally impressive range of wines, and all at quite reasonable prices. If you are planning to visit this incredibly beautiful city, include this steakhouse on your itinerary.
